As a result, there are potentially more than 5 million tons of protein-rich side streams available for higher value applications that are presently underutilized. Today, these are mainly used for animal feed, as fishmeal and silage, in pet food or discarded.

AQUABIOPRO-FIT will address this challenge by promoting the efficient utilisation of European aquaculture, fisheries and agriculture side streams in animal feed and nutritional supplement products for fitness and health. Τhis provides greater opportunities of producing nutritional and functional products from a relatively untapped biomass source while contributing to environmentally responsible and sustainable practices of efficient resource use. Overall, high-quality nutrients and bioactives are obtained while aiming to reduce waste by 50%.
